Have you been following the news lately? Thirty-six-year-old American actress Meghan Markle is engaged to charming 33-year-old Prince Harry! While you are still taking in the news, let’s talk about Meghan’s family a little. The two lovebirds announced their engagement on 27 November, although it was later revealed Prince Harry proposed to Meghan earlier in November.
Now, Meghan’s half-sister has revealed that their elusive father allegedly wants to walk his daughter down the aisle at the wedding next spring.
Prince Harry and Suits actress Meghan are to marry in May next year at St. George’s Chapel, located on the grounds of Windsor Castle. Thomas Markle, a TV lighting engineer who lives in Mexico, might be attending the May ceremony with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland. The two divorced when their daughter was five and it is still unclear whether Thomas will make it to the wedding.
Meghan’s half-sister, 53-year-old Samantha Grant, spoke to US Weekly: “I’m sure he wants to walk her down the aisle. I know he wants to do it.”
She added: “He’s a shy guy now, he’s a quiet man, but he’ll speak when he feels it’s appropriate. He gave me permission to say how happy he is, but he’ll talk when he’s ready”.
Harry is said to be considering flying to Mexico with his fiancee to meet her father. It was also reported that the 33-year-old member of the royal family did phone Thomas Markle to ask for his permission to propose to his daughter before the engagement earlier this month.
Meghan’s 50-year-old half-brother Thomas Jr. previously said: “When Meggie was born, Dad was a completely changed man. Before then, Dad’s work took priority over everything but she became his whole world. She was her daddy’s princess”.
When the actress was only five, her parents divorced. She lived with her mother during the week, and with her father at weekends. It is also unknown if Meghan will invite her half-sister and half-brother. She hasn’t spoken to her half-sister Samantha Grant in a decade. Her half-brother Thomas Markle Jr. was once arrested for allegedly holding a gun to his girlfriend’s head.
Even though they haven’t been officially invited, they are apparently willing to come to the UK for the event. Meghan’s nephew, 26-year-old T.J. Dooley, from Oregon, told The Sun: “I’d probably come to the UK for the wedding – even if I’m not invited. I am thrilled.”
This week, Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland spoke of their happiness when they heard the news of the engagement. “We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents. We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited about their future together,” they stated.
Though they divorced in 1987, Thomas and Doria remained friends.
Meghan has also spoken of her love for her parents, saying that her clinical therapist mother was “her inspiration” after she went back to university as a mature student and earned a master’s degree in social work.
On Mother’s Day last year, Meghan posted a picture of Doria on Instagram, writing: “Always proud of this beautiful woman.” Miss Markle also described Hollywood lighting director Thomas, as the “most hardworking father you can imagine”.
One person who might not be present at the wedding is The Duchess of Cambridge.
